Our Impact
The Difference Made by Restored Sight
Cataract & Surgical Activity
Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for over half of global vision loss In Jamaica, long wait times and financial barriers prevent many seniors and working adults from accessing timely surgical care.
Recovery of Sight Means
Restored Independence: Take the case of Mr. Alton, a landscaper whose vision loss cost him his livelihood. After cataract surgery, he can work again bringing pride and income back to his family
Community-Wide Benefits: Clear vision enables seniors to maintain self-care and mobility, reducing pressure on family caregivers and public services.
Bridging Healthcare Gaps: With just 1.32 ophthalmologists per 100,000 people in Jamaica and nearly half the population never screened, our missions provide vital, life-restoring care that otherwise wouldn’t occur
Increased productivity and employment and Income gains: Patients increase in productivity, improvement in employability and higher income after vision restoration. Adults with clear vision can maintain jobs, support their families, and contribute to local commerce.
Healthcare sustainability: By partnering with local clinics and training Jamaican surgeons, we ensure lasting access to high-quality surgical care
Children's Vision Clinics
Clear Vision for a Brighter Future
At Mission of Sight, we believe that bright young minds deserve clear sight. Our Children’s Vision Clinic delivers comprehensive eye care to children in rural western Jamaica, empowering students to thrive in school and beyond.
We Provide:
Comprehensive Eye Exams: Screenings to detect nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and other early vision issues
Prescription Eyewear: Free glasses for students for correction and protection
Vision Education: Awareness programs for children, parents, and teachers highlighting why regular eye checks are crucial to learning.
Why It Matters
In Jamaica, many children with vision problems go undiagnosed due to limited access to eye care, especially in rural and underserved communities. Early detection and treatment is transformational. When Jamaican children receive proper eye care, they:
Stay engaged and succeed in the classroom: Clear vision helps them read the board, follow lessons, and complete assignments with confidence.
Build self-esteem and social connections: Being able to see clearly allows children to fully participate in school life and interact with peers without frustration or isolation.
Avoid falling behind: Vision challenges can often be mistaken for learning difficulties. Timely eye care helps prevent misdiagnosis and keeps children on track with their education.
By restoring and protecting vision, we’re not just improving eyesight, we’re shaping futures.
