A vision that became a mission

Mission of Sight is a U.S. faith-based 501(c)(3) non-profit and a recognized Registered Charity of Jamaica that is dedicated primarily to helping those with impaired vision by restoring their sight. Founded in 2005 by Dr. & Mrs. Douglas McCloy and a handful of faithful friends, Mission of Sight was birthed because of a spiritual call to the recovery of sight according to Luke 4:18 as well as a simple yet powerful belief: no one should live in darkness due to preventable blindness.

What began a small family optical outreach in rural Jamaica has grown into a global movement to restore sight and transform lives. Founded by a team of compassionate optometrists and volunteers, Mission of Sight set out to bridge the gap in access to quality, affordable and accessible eye care for people in underserved communities.

Early missions focused on getting glasses on the faces of people who simply could not afford and exam nor glasses. With every restored vision came renewed dignity, independence, and hope. Word spread, needs grew, and so did our commitment.

What We believe

Called to the Recovery of Sight....Luke 4:18

At the very heart of Mission of Sight is the divine call found in Luke 4:18: “He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind…” This scripture is not only a verse, but is also the foundation of Dr. Doug McCloy’s mission and passion for the people of Jamaica. Guided by this sacred mandate, Dr. McCloy, his partner in Ministry and life Rhonda, and the Mission of Sight team, have dedicated their lives to restoring physical sight as a reflection of God’s healing power and love. For the Mission of Sight team, each surgery is an act of obedience, compassion, and service, giving people not only clearer vision but renewed dignity, purpose, and hope. Mission of Sight exists because of this calling: to be the hands and feet of Christ by bringing light where there was once darkness.

The Mission Continued..

It soon became clear that glasses were not enough as the staggering eye disease seen among the population and the limited access to eye care was great. Cataract Surgery became the target. Over a span of several years in partnership with the Church of the Nazarene, Mission of Sight led the construction of a 10,000 square foot facility that supported surgical and clinical eye care operations for a large, rural region of Jamaicans living in underserved areas.

In 2019, Mission of Sight and Professional Eye Care successfully established a second eye surgery location in Montego Bay with expanded comprehensive and sub-specialty surgical services. The procedures performed restore sight and are enabling countless patients with severe visual impairment to regain independence in their daily lives. These procedures also prevent further visual deterioration, enabling people to retain what sight they may have left. Additionally, through the sustainability partnership with Professional Eye Care and other partners, Mission of Sight has been able to employ local Optometrists and Ophthalmologists to continue care so that patients are cared for consistently throughout the year, regardless of the Missions and volunteer schedule.

Though Jamaica is our primary mission field, through the work of Board Member Dr. Brian Stahl, Mission of Sight has expanded its reach across to South America, Africa, and other regions where blindness and visual impairment create generational stagnation. We’ve partnered with local hospitals, trained medical teams, and improved systems for sustainable eye care.
